Lucent Technologies Selects Baxter Planning Systems' Prophet
by Baxter(TM) for Worldwide Service Planning
AUSTIN, TX - (April 16, 2001) - Baxter Planning Systems, Inc., the leading
provider of web-based service parts planning solutions, has announced that
Lucent Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: LU) has selected Prophet by Baxter for its
worldwide material planning and parts positioning solution. The contract will
capitalize on Baxter's suite of products, Prophet by Baxter, including site
planning, distribution planning, product forecasting, material forecasting
and supply planning for Lucent Worldwide Services service parts logistics.
Lucent, a leader in broadband and mobile Internet communication systems will
be utilizing Prophet by Baxter to assist in selecting the warehouse and stocking
locations that should be used for inventory, based on service contracts and
service level agreements by postal code worldwide. Once the appropriate sites
are determined, optimal stocking levels will be set for all locations from
distribution centers to field locations. The unique planning approach developed
in Prophet by Baxter and deployed by Baxter Planning Systems, ensures contractual
obligations are met and inventory is optimized at all levels.
"Lucent evaluated the top five providers of service parts supply chain management
software, and selected Prophet by Baxter due to its depth of functionality. Those
five software products appeared to provide about the same capabilities at a high
and broad level, but it was the detailed functionality that set Prophet by Baxter

went on to say, "It is that detailed functionality that allows Prophet by Baxter
to reduce service parts inventories over 50%, while other software products generally
only gain 15% to 20% reductions. Not only are inventories reduced by over 50%,
customer service levels increase dramatically and in some cases to over 99%.

Lucent was looking for a successful track record and was impressed with the
results Prophet by Baxter achieved for its clients, including Hewlett-Packard's
success over the past seven years. Baxter's competitive advantage in securing
such long-term commitments is their unparalleled understanding of service parts

Lucent Technologies will use Baxter's ASP model for minimal impact on the IT
organization and considerably faster implementation, hence, faster time-to-market.
The system will be in full production within approximately three months from
the start of implementation, warp speed when compared to standard industry
delivery of six to nine months.
